What can the church learn from television?

I had a thought today and decided to follow it up with a little research.

Here is the thought: It seems as if there are very few successful television shows today that are serialized (one episode builds upon the previous, one season builds upon the previous.)

So what did I find out about this? I was right, not only are there few serialized shows, the shows that are still around are losing viewers!

What are we to learn from this? Now, I am not certain but it seems as though we may need learn from this and make what we are doing in the church accessible to everyone, no matter when they show up throughout the year.

I have seen a pattern, and I have been guilty of this, of building a message series that has a particular progression toward a particular end in the final message of the series. Where does this leave a person who comes in on week 4 of a six week series?

Maybe we should begin to think about series in terms of each message coming at a particular facet of the goal of the the series.

Here is grachical representation of what I am thinking:

linear series VERSUSfacet series
