The Frustration
ByIn case you missed it, yesterday I posted a portion of an email that I received from a para-church ministry that really frustrated me.
You may be asking, “What’s you problem with that? Isn’t it great to introduce kids to Jesus?”
Well, my short answer is “Yes.” The longer answer has to do with the entire mindset that the email was written in. It seems to me that the approach to ministry that this email is standing for creates an extremely
consumeristic atmosphere. The assumption here is that the only way that we are going to be able to introduce teenagers to Jesus is if we give them something else too, maybe it should be called Mary Poppins Youth Ministry, “a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down.”
Maybe some of my frustration comes from the way that I am begining to see my own life with Jesus & my youth ministry experience. It hurts but this just might be one of those experiences in which I see a speck in the eye of another only to realize the log in my own eye.
How are you doing though? Are you creating an atmosphere that helps teens develop into young adults that want Jesus or are you helping to create young adults that want Jesus when it is convenient?
