box-topSo here’s the deal, my wife is a 4th grade teacher and her school has a little competition going on in which each classroom attempts to collect as many Box Tops For Education as possible to try to win a pizza party for the class.  Sarah’s class is pretty close to the top of the rankings in her building.  This where you come in, would you be willing to find some of these “box tops” around your house, maybe you’ve collected some over time,  then mail them to me?

If you’ve got 5, 10, 50, 100 she’ll be happy to take them!  Just send me a quick note here and I’ll get you the mailing address!  Thanks so much!  Maybe I’ll even have a little prize for the person that mails in the most box tops to me (think a great book!)

You’re going to be at The Orange Conference?  Do yourself a favor and stop by The Bloggers’ Lounge!  We’ve a got a steady supply of coffee running through there to keep you going.  Oh, you’ll also want to connect with all the great bloggers up there too!

But here’s the real story behind this photo…

Last Thursday I drove my in-laws to Rochester (1.5 hrs. west of Syracuse) for an appointment with a doctor.  When I went down to the lobby to get a coffee I met the great people from Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters.  I found their t-shirts to be a little confusing at first, the front of the shirts have their logo and right above it are the letters “FLCR-ECS.”  Well, now that you’ve seen the picture you”ve got it!  What a great concept for a coffee shop in a hospital!

I am getting another pair of TOMS Shoes soon and I need your help!  I am having a tough time making a decision so I thought I would ask for your expert fashion opinions.  Below you’ll find the two options, leave me a comment and let me know which one I should pick.  I am going to be giving away two copies of Doug Fields book What Matters Most and you could win one of them by helping me out with this!

OK, here are the options:

A: The University Ash Rope Sole TOMS

B: The Olive Canvas Stitchout TOMS

shoe-choicesI’ll be making my decision on Saturday, 4/18, so get to it!

This past Saturday afternoon a team from TOMS Shoes was my neck of the woods for an event and since I’m a fan of theirs I decided to drop on by to see what was going on.

The event was basically a way for TOMS to get word out about what the company is doing.  There was a team of about 5 or 6 (?) super friendly (not in the weird kind of way!) TOMS vagabonds (facebook link) who were there to answer the questions that people had about what TOMS is all about, they had a store set up to buy selected TOMS products, and they showed a short (and pretty awesome) documentary about TOMS.

My wife and I were already proud owners and wearers of TOMS but on Saturday I made the call to another pair for Sarah & myself.

Check out this video and see their website to find out more about their company. Oh! And if you are interested and in a position to do so, there are some really exciting ways to get involved with the company!

This coming week should be pretty interesting!  I’m heading to the annual gathering of all of the National Student Ministry Team of the Free Methodist Church.  It’s just a fancy name for the group of denominational youth ministry representatives from the different geographic areas of the country.   For part of our time we’ll be hanging out with Mark Yaconelli (author of Contemplative Youth Ministry, Growing Souls, and Downtime: Helping Teenagers Pray.)  I’m not really sure what we’ll be doing with mark but I am sure that it will be good!  Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to coax Mark into doing a special video post for YouthMinBlog.com on this week’s topic of dealing with discouragement.  What do you think the chances of that are?

I had been hearing about the infamous TimTams for a while now and then Tony Steward introduced me to the TimTam Slam! So Sarah and I decided to pick up a couple packs of TimTams at Target and an XL coffee from Tim Horton’s, here is what followed:

I got a fun new toy today and I am using it to write this post! Yes it’s an iPod Touch. I already have it loaded with the YouVersion app, the Facebook app, Wordpress app, and Twitterific app!

Here is the view that I get to see every morning on my way into the office!  Just thought I’d share…
(Sorry for the low quality, only had my cell phone with me to record.)

Yes, this post is a little late in coming since I got home from the trip on Sunday night and it is now Thursday!  Please forgive me, I have had a ton going on in order to catch up on things from being away for a week, wrapping up stuff from the jr. high camp that happened just before I left, and I am speaking at the adult worship services this coming weekend.

Anyway, the trip was great!  I drove to Rochester from Syracuse where I met my dad so we could travel to the Ace Adventure Center in Minden, WV where we would meet my brothers.  My youngest brother drove up from Atlanta to Charlotte where he met the middle brother.  They then continued on the meet up with us in WV.

Just before arriving at the camp site my dad and I pulled off to check out the overlook area of the New River Gorge.  What an awesome sight!  That bridge is the longest arched bridge in the Western Hemisphere and the bridge deck stands around 900′ above the river!

The whitewater was really what we were there for though!  Here are some pics from the day:

  • My brothers and I getting outfitted for the day (left to right: Me, Keith, Kevin)

  • All four of us at our lunch break spot!  Lunch was great by the way, all kinds of side dishes to go with a choice of chicken, burgers, hot dogs, or tuna steaks! (left to right: Dad, Keith, Me, Kevin)

  • The brothers and I in the river!  This was planned though.  The pic was taken just after a section of class II rapids that our guide told us we could get out of the raft and float through!

  • Here is some of the action!  The is from the start of a section of some big class V whitewater! (click on the pic to see it bigger)

  • Now here is the real action!  Three out of the four seated on the one side of the boat got dumped! (click on the pic to see it bigger, click HERE to see one with labels)

I can’t wait to go back!

All things considered this was a pretty good week!  No weight loss but I didn’t go backwards either and considering this past weekend was filled with the junk food of a jr. high camp and was also filled with the first sodas (probably 6-7 of them) that I have had in months it was a great week!  All of the down sides meant that I had to work extra hard on the bike.  I usually ride about 13 mi./day when I ride to and from the office.  This week, on my vacation, I have been riding 18 mi./day.

Here are the stats:

* Goal = 195
* Starting weight = 220
* After week 13 = 202.5
* This week = 0 change
* Total= -17.5
