What’s Going On Here?
Posted by: | CommentsSome of you have heard about Derek Webb’s latest album, Stockholm Syndrome, which has not been released yet. Last week he sent out a letter to his fans stating that there were issues with the publishing company over the content of the album, here is the letter that he sent:
friends-
i haven’t sent many personal emails to this email list but we’re in a situation that has gotten a little out of control and it’s time to fill you in. as some of you may know, i’ve been working for months on my new record, ‘stockholm syndrome’, which i’ve recently finished and turned in to the record label. they’ve been very supportive over the years, but this time we didn’t get the response we expected. it seems i’ve finally found the line beyond which my label can support me, and apparently i’ve crossed it.i consider this my most important record and am adamant about all of you hearing it. we had originally hoped to have ‘stockholm syndrome’ out this month (next week even), but at this point we’re not sure when the record will come out and in what form. the majority of the controversy is surrounding one song, which i consider to be among the most important songs on the record. so we’ve decided it’s an appropriate time to break the rules.
but because of various legal/publishing issues we’re having to be rather careful with how we do what we’re going to do next. that’s really all i can say for now and i’ve probably said too much.
we have a plan and we’re moving ahead, but we’re not sure what kind of trouble we might be getting into. we’ll let you know as soon as we know our next move-
derek
That email created a stir amongst fans of Derek and a whole lot of speculation over what exactly could be so offensive to the publishing company. Then I found this email in my inbox this morning from Derek:
friends-
this is turning into a bigger deal than we expected. as a result, we’re having to temporarily _pull everything online down (can’t explain now). and to be on the s_afe side, i’m going to pe_rsonally go offline while we sort this out. i re_ally shouldn’t use my twitter account for now either so _don’t expect any updates there.make no m_istake, our trouble with the label over content i_s very real, and not as simple as one word; we’re back_ed into a corner. but we have applied all of our creative resources to th_is, working furiou_sly to create something that we believe not only subverts any leg_al issues but should also be a _pretty wild ride.
so this will be the l_ast email for a while. we’ll t_ry to lea_k information via a new tw_itter account, @ssyndrome. you’re o_n your own so start payin_g attention. i’l_l see you _on the o_ther side-
derek
Is there some sort of code in there? Is Derek attempting to set this up like the publishing company is holding him “hostage?” Remember what Stockholm Syndrome is all about after all.
Is this the begining of a Jesus Wants To Save Christians style game? Could it be that he is simply engaged in a marketing scheme?
Protecting The Flock?
Posted by: | Comments
I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share this story that I found over on Tony Jones blog!
Take a read through the post below, check out the video and the full article if you want to, then let us know that you think! Is this a viable method of ”care for the flock?” What are you thinking about this story?
In Dallas, youth pastors are being trained in street fighting techniques in order to, um, “take care of their flock.”
Jeff McKissack is spreading the Batman gospel to youth pastors in Dallas and across the country. He hopes to convert them into followers of the Keysi Fighting Method, the street fighting style used in recent cinematic blockbusters.
McKissack figures that pastors who know how to defend themselves against thugs can help protect the children they lead at church – or on field trips to amusement parks or on mission travels.
“It’s a sign of the times,” he said
Because, as the youth pastor says, “you never know what’s going to happen when you take the kids out of these four walls.”
OK, first of all, I was a youth pastor for 20 years, taking kids to some pretty sketchy places like Lima, Peru and Juarez, Mexico. And, while I occasionally felt that we were threatened, never once would the Keysi bob-and-weave have come in handy.
Secondly, I think we can safely say that teenagers are often just as threatened within the four walls as without.
The erstwhile youth pastor goes on to say, “I don’t think as Christians that we’re meant to be just stomped on.”
Really?
(Jesus: “But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.“)
Guess What!
Posted by: | CommentsCome on, really take a guess!
Well, you may have noticed that you are still here, the power is still on, and the world didn’t end! We have a new president-elect (sort of, it’s not official until the electoral votes are certified by Congress) and chances are pretty good that your candidate didn’t get elected. Guess what! Your life and my life still go on and above everything else we are called to follow Jesus through everything! We are not called to simply know that “God is in control,” or that “Jesus is Lord.” We are called to follow Jesus through the great times in life, through the tough times of life, and through the confusing times of life. So go on with your day and follow Jesus, live above the controversy of the election, bring your conversations to a new level that will create some real conversation.
(I wrote this at 6:30pm on Tuesday, so I really don’t know who won, it really doesn’t matter to my attempt at following Jesus and introducing Him to the culture around me.)
Finally!
Posted by: | CommentsI am always hearing about different events like flag football tournaments, 3v3 basketball, and so on. Finally an event comes along that is much more my style!

The Red Bull Street Style is my style!
Thanks for the heads up Ben!
Less complaining, more doing!
Posted by: | CommentsYou may have heard the news over the past week that Starbucks is closing 600 underperforming stores and is slowing the pace of opening new stores to only 200 in the upcoming year, and cutting nearly 12,000 positions in order to stay “leaner” in the this economic climate. Anyway, I came across this story yesterday and learned that apparently there are people out there that are actually happy about this. It seems that these people are not anti-coffee or anything like that. In fact, the people that are the most outspoken about being happy that Starbucks seems to have hit a “wall” are people that would most likely consider themselves coffee connoisseurs.
Here is where this rubs me the wrong way. In reading about this I couldn’t help but think of all the people out there that make a lot of noise in attacking the mega-churches. Why do people spend so much time and effort being against things, churches or Starbucks? To me, it makes even less sense in the church world. God has trusted you and me with being a part of helping people find their way to Him in our our little part of the world. Let’s worry more about what we can do to be more loving and more relevant in our communities and less time worrying about what other people are doing in other places.
PS- This is also extremely dumb for coffee lovers! Read More→
Market Changes
Posted by: | CommentsHas anyone else noticed changes at the grocery store lately?
I don’t mean the obvious ones like
the prices of beef and milk. Check this out:
The box on the right in both photos is one that I bought about two and a half weeks ago.
The box on the left in both photos is one that I bought yesterday at the same store, for the same price as the first box.
The packaging is slightly different and you can see that the box that I bought yesterday is a little smaller. It turns out that the new box holds 14.5oz while the old (two weeks) box holds 16oz!
Hmmm…
MPG or MPD?
Posted by: | CommentsI just read an article over at MSN that said that we need to start thinking about our vehicle’s fuel economy in a new way, in terms of miles per dollar not miles per gallon. Sounded a little weird at first but then I read about this common scenario:
- Your car gets 21 MPG
- Gas costs you $3/gal
- Car gets 7 MPD, you pay $1 for every seven mile markers you pass.
- You drive on the highway @ 70 MPH
- You are paying $10 PER HOUR to drive your car!
Ugh! I think I just threw up a little in my mouth…
I think it is going to cost me about $1.15 to get home from church tonight.
Blogging Friend
Posted by: | CommentsIf you are out there and you have not heard of Carlos Whittaker’s blog Ragamuffin Soul, well let’s just say you better get over there and check this guy out. He is the real deal when it comes to blogging and following Jesus. Lots of people have blogs and they pretend to have all the answers about everything, they are the experts, not Carlos. He just about being real, even though he could be considered an expert (he is the Service Programming Director at Buckhead Church, a campus of Northpoint).
Anyway, my real reason for this post is that I wanted to make you aware of a little project he is working on:

As Carlos says, he is “going to spread the good love that Compassion International is doing in Uganda.”

Colorado
Posted by: | CommentsToday there were a sad series of events that happened in Colorado. There is still confusion over exactly what has happened and it is unknown if the two different incidents are connected (article.)
Here is thing that bothers me though…
Although it is very disturbing that someone would enter on to a church campus and engage in an act of utmost violence, I find it equally as troubling that a church employs an armed security guards and that a church security guard opened fire on the assailant and killed this person.
Of course many will argue that without this guard many more people would have been injured and killed but I say what about the teachings of Jesus?
I believe that Jesus clearly shows us a way of pacifism. So do we sit back and do nothing? No, pacifism is not the same as passivity. I am not in a place to tell others how to react, that is up to you but I do know that pacifism is the way of Jesus. Click here to see article on church shooting.
