Seth Godin Would Be Proud

You know how it goes, you buy something online and then you start getting catalogs in the mail. This time something was different though and I almost missed it…
I grabbed the mail from the mailbox the other day and threw the “junk mail” in a pile to be sorted for shredding and recycling and I noticed what sort of, but not really, looked like a catalog from Backcountry.com. It turns out that this was no catalog at all, here’s what I read on the inside cover:
THIS IS NOT A CATALOG
We’ve tried that before — Many times, in fact. And no matter what we did, it left the same bland taste in our mouths. It always seemed like something that came out of an ad agency in Chicago, not from a bunch of dirtbag ski bums in Park City. The smattering of products and staid format never felt true to our voice or to those passionate about out gear and the outdoors.
So we trashed it. But rather than using a tanking economy as an excuse to bag the the whole project, we switched it up and focused instead on what sets Backcountry.com apart — you, the community. We scoured our Leaderboard…
They made a catazine, a magalog, or whatever. What they made is different and true to who they are and what drives them as a company. That is branding.
Is your ministry being authentic in branding or are you just trying to adapt other ministries’ branding to your situation?
Church Online?
Posted by: | CommentsLately I’ve noticed many arguments on both sides of the online chuch debate. I was kind of ambivelent on the subject and although I still have not really made up my mind, I am starting to lean.
In reading Eugene Peterson’s The Jesus Way, I got to thinking about how the “ends,” (our goal) must have “means,” (the how) that are aligned with the end. What I mean is simply this, if we are going to follow Jesus, we need to have a congruent way of life, a “Jesusy” life. This means thatwe need to find ways of helping ourselves to live better and I really wonder if online church does that.
It seems to me that the best way that we have of learning to live better is by having people around us in our live that are there for us to help us live better. We need brothers and sisters that are willing to say the hard things at the hard times so that we can grow. Can online church really do that? Can online church help us to really live better? I’ve not totally made up my mind yet, but it seems to me that the relationships that are developed online can’t usually take us to the places that we really need to deal with in our lives.
There is no doubt that one can find great teaching and encouragement in the online world, but do we really have relationships that help us to live better?
Talking About Citrus!?
Posted by: | Comments
You may be asking yourself why I am all of a sudden talking about citrus. Why all this talk about Orange? Well, I’m not actuall talking about the fruit, I’m talking about the color, or more precise yet, the color that represents a philosophy.
Here is the lowdown.
The basic idea behind orange is that two combined influences have a greater impact than just two influences.
That seems obvious right? If you took two garden hoses and sprayed the water out of them you would have a certain effect but if you took the same amount of water and put it it through a single hose there would be a much greater impact, right? Same goes with color, and this is where we get to orange. Yellow and red are two very fine colors, in fact one of them may be your favorite color. However, when you bring the two of them together they create orange and that is a color of impact, it gets your attention!
So what does all this have to do with ministry?
Check out Deuteronomy 6:1-9
These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.
Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Job job of passing on the faith was never supposed to be assigned to the church, it was the job of the family. Deuteronomy 6 is saying that the family should be investing in the spiritual development of their children in all that they do; in the morning before they are sent off to school, while traveling to lacrosse practice, at the dinner table, and before they go to sleep.
It seems like a lot. Parents are busy and so are their kids, so this is where the church can come in and combine influence with the parents. The church can help parents with resources, discussion points, common experiences, etc. All with the aim of being a combined influence in order to have a much greater impact in the life of a child than if parents and the church were each attempting to do their own thing in the life of the child.
Handling Adversity
Posted by: | CommentsThere have been a lack of posts here lately because of a difficult situation that has come up in the life of my church. Last week I found out that my sr. pastor needed to go in for a surgery this week and was going to need to take himself out of the everyday operation of the church for the next few weeks. As you can imagine, this has greatly impacted our church as it would any. But here is the thing that makes all the difference in the world, our perspective on adversity.
There are a few options that we have when it comes to how we view adversity, we can:
- Rush into preservation mode
- Welcome the challenges that lay ahead
I’m proud to be part of a church that has opted for #2. While we are fervently praying for our pastor, we are also welcoming the challenges ahead and looking forward to how they will refine us, refine our ministries, and bring us closer together as a staff and ministry team.
Have you been a part of a church that has experienced adversity? What was your experience?

To Tat or Not To Tat
Posted by: | CommentsOk, time for some fun around here! This one is an “all skate!” I know from the stats on this blog that there are a WHOLE BUNCH of you that are reading and not commenting, so jump on in!
You’ve heard of churches and conferences including live artists as part of their worship experiences, now Barton has brought our attention to a church that has used a live tattoo artist as part of their worship experience.

I’m curious as to where you all fall on this subject! Take this quick survey then leave a comment and let’s discuss!
Some encouragement?
Posted by: | CommentsLet’s try to be the Church for each other first. What area of life do you need some encouragement in? How can we be praying for you?
Leave a comment below, anonymously for today, and we’ll pray for you! Hey, I’m even going to jump in and make my comment anonymous today! (Yes, you are allowed to invent an email address for that box, just for today.)

“Being the Church” Online
Posted by: | CommentsTwo of my favorite people (Tony & Carlos) that I have never met have teamed up to attempt something that I don’t think has ever happened before, an event that ties together thousands of people from all over the world in “being the Church” online. Here is what Tony had to say about the event:
I have been asking myself how are we to “be” the church in online community, social networks and all the “Friends” we have have compiled through these tools. I think part of the struggle is that a lot of these relationship and community tools are focused on keeping us “connecting.” Meaning, they don’t want us to leave the site, they want us to stay there as much as possible so we will either buy things or click on advertisements.
I think the same thing can happen in a local church situation, where we are always gathering and connecting for church, but never moving to the next level and “being” the church to each other, to the hurting and “in need” around us and to people who need to hear about Jesus.
So, this last week was my first week at LifeChurch.tv working on their Internet Campus. We were thinking how we could do an online missions event – with the idea of as a community “being” the church online. What we came up with is an online event starting next Wednesday 8pm CST (September 17) called LifeShare: a 7 day online challenge.
You can go to this post on the Internet Campus blog for all the details, but the idea is that sharing is a huge part of online communities, just as it is for believers. As followers of Jesus it is all about sharing what we’ve heard, sharing how we have been loved, and sharing of ourselves as it glorifies Christ. To launch the even we will start with a live stream through Mogulus where we explain the event, we give some “sharing” ideas and we pray for each other and then all of us as a community take a 7 day challenge at “being” the church online!
AND we didn’t want to just limit it to LifeChurch.tv, or have the event be something flown under our “banner”, so we have invited Carlos Whittaker and the Ragamuffinsoul.com community to participate and help us to lead the 7 day challenge. YOUR community is invited as well! After the first launch we are going to have daily live stream check ins and prayers lead by people taking the challenge from across the world!
Again, all the DETAILS are here, with schedules, the 5 different levels of “sharing”, and some tools to help your sharing of your life for Jesus!
