Some of you have been to the Youth Specialties CORE, one day training events in the past, well now it is simply called One Day. The theme of the training for this coming year is The Bible: Bring It On!

I am really excited about this seminar coming up because I have already been working within my youth ministry to implement some of the ideas behind this training event and it has been a lot of fun to introduce teenagers to storying and inductive Bible study!  You should not be missing this event, it really is a bargain, especially if you follow my advice at the end of this post!

This is the one youth worker training event that you will not want to miss and you will definitly want to make sure the other adults on your youth ministry team are there!

I know that for my ministry team, this is the one main training event that we look forward to each and every year. Some of my volunteers have been to the Willow Creek SHIFT conference and the the National Youth Workers Convention but we always come back to this one day training event that Youth Specialties does every year because we believe it is such a great way to connect our team and it is so practical for our everyday ministry.

I know it is coming up quick but if you are in the Upstate New York area make sure you register for the Syracuse date (May 2), I’d love to have you out to my church! Plus, Fred Lynch is the presenter and he is a ton of fun! (Fred, if you see this take it as a reminder to remember to bring the $$ for the bookstore this year!)

Oh, rumor has it that if you register at NNYM.com and you use their discount code, you get a sweet discount on registration! ;-)

Or is it?

A few days ago I received the first issue of the Neue Quarterly so today I decided it was time to pull it out, browse around and find a pithy article to digest while Sarah was doing school work on our “working date” at Panera.

I landed on an article entitled “Don’t Forget Justice” by Brian McLaren.  Now, before you dismiss the rest of this because you think you know what McLaren is all about, take a deep breath, relax, and check out this verse:

Micah 6:8

He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

Action Items:

  1. Act justly
  2. Love mercy
  3. Walk humbly with God

Seriously, take a minute to think about what that verse means for your life.  Are you living it out or is two out of three good enough for you?

I have to admit that for far too long I have lived with the mentality that two out of three was good enough.  In fact, I really thought that there was really only 2 things that I needed to do.  Here is what stuck with me though.  If I am only getting two out of the three, then I may as well not be getting any of them.  What am I talking about?

In the article there is one major “callout quote” on the two page spread.  Here is the quote:

If we only focus on mercy, we can unwittingly aid and abet those who practice injustice.

Let’s think about the three “action items” from Micah 6:8.  It would be pretty safe to say that most churches and most Christians totally agree that we should be walking humbly with God.  No problem there.  More and more Christians and churches are grasping the fact that they should be committed to showing mercy in our neighborhoods and throughout the world.  Really getting better there!  Are we really doing justice though?

Justice the the action that gets to the root of the problem.  If a group like IJM goes into a brothel in Bangkok and rescues a young girl that was forced into prostitution by buying her back from her “owner,” mercy has certainly taken place, but has justice been done?  No, that “owner” now has space and money to go get a new girl and start the process over.  Justice is taking place when IJM does the work to not only rescue that girl but to put an end to what that owner is doing, it is getting to the root of the problem and dealing with the dirty details.

You may have noticed that I have a new banner in the upper left corner of this blog, or the widget on the right hand side.  Compassion International is a group that it seems has just about mastered the art of combining justice and mercy.  I would be easy for Compassion to have mercy and provide food to millions and millions of hungry children around the world but they have chosen to take the more difficult, messier path of working toward cutting off the problems at the root.  When you sponsor a Compassion child you are not only providing food for their hungry mouths, you are providing an education and giving them a chance to experience Jesus in the flesh so that in turn they can do the same as they grow into adults.

Take another minute and figure out how you are doing justice in the world.  Maybe you need to help fund an entrepreneur over at Kiva, sponsor a child with Compassion, or doing something more hands on in your own neighborhood. Whatever it is, get out there and do justice!

I got a fun new toy today and I am using it to write this post! Yes it’s an iPod Touch. I already have it loaded with the YouVersion app, the Facebook app, Wordpress app, and Twitterific app!

Planning Retreat – Part 1

Read the passage that I mention here.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

(Yes, I do realize that I am using a verse from the second chapter of Proverbs, get over it :-) )

It’s the men who walk straight who will settle this land, the women with integrity who will last here. The corrupt will lose their lives;the dishonest will be gone for good. Proverbs 2:21-22

Another sign from my favorite dry cleaner!

“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”  A Simple Guide for Behavior. Matthew 6:34 (MSG)

There is a dry cleaner that I pass every time I go to church, which for me is a lot!  The thing that I love about this dry cleaner is that they have a huge sign out front and they are constantly changing the messages on it (about 4-5 times/week.)  Today I was driving up to church to make a clothing exchange (picking up and dropping of “office clothes” so I can ride the bike without them) and I noticed the new message:

Taking action on the message of this sign is the solution to so many problems!

When it comes to oppression in the world or in our neighborhoods, the solution is not to complain about it but rather to take action.

When it comes to living as followers of Jesus in a world full of sin and so many people that don’t have the slightest clue about who Jesus is, the solution is not to retract into our protective shells (church) and complain about all of the problems “out there” but rather it is to live and love as followers of Jesus right in the middle of the darkness.

If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Matthew 5:15

For years I have tried to be as clear as I can when talking about Jesus, about the Kingdom, and about what it means to follow Jesus in building the Kingdom. Then I read something in Luke 8 (youversion.com link for context) today that caught my attention like never before.

[Jesus] said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, “ ;‘though seeing, they may not see; ; though hearing, they may not understand.’

What!? Jesus intentionally spoke in a way so that those that were not intent on seeking would not understand! That seems kind of crazy, but then I got think about how much we trust the Holy Spirit to actually be the one doing the teaching.

Anyway, I guess my real question is on how this applies to youth ministry. How does the way that Jesus taught apply to us today teaching to a group of people (teenagers) that are in the midst of physical, intellectual, and emotional change? Many teenagers are still developing their ability to fully grasp abstract thoughts (as a many adults but that’s a whole other story.)

So, what are your thoughts on teaching our teenagers as Jesus taught the folks following him? Do you have any tips or ideas on integrating “stories” into teaching?

So I thought I’d share a few of my devotional thoughts from today…

  • Scripture:

By this time a lot of men and women of doubtful reputation were hanging around Jesus, listening intently.

Luke15:1(The Message)

  • Observation:

There is obviously something beyond the miracles and lessons that Jesus was teaching that compelled these people to hang with Him.  Surely the rabbis were full of good lessons, they were pretty smart, the best of the best academically.  If they wanted good lessons they could go to the rabbis.  It couldn’t be that they wanted to hang around because of the miracles, they wouldn’t be there “listening intently” if that were the case.  It seems to me that the only thing that could have caused this reaction among the people was the deep, authentic love of Jesus.

  • Application:

The focus of my living today needs to be on authenticity.  I need to let people experience me, who Jesus is making me, and the love of Christ within me.
